WARNING, GRAPHIC: Police release video of officer-involved shooting in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - On Friday, Colorado Springs police released video of an officer-involved shooting near Astrozon and S. Academy that left a man dead on Dec. 14.

Colorado Springs police said the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman saying her husband was acting suicidal and had a gun to his head.

Police said by the time the sheriff’s office responded to the home, the man had already left the area, prompting deputies to release a ‘Be on the lookout,’ warning to find the man.

Around 11 p.m. police were then called to the 3800 block of Astrozon Blvd. for a reported active shooting. Police said the caller said his cousin who worked at a restaurant was reportedly being shot at.

Police said when they arrived at the parking lot, the man was in his truck, holding a gun to his head. They asked the man to drop his weapon, but the man refused and made suicidal statements.

Officers said they attempted to de-escalate the situation. More officers then arrived on scene to ensure the suspect would not drive off.

For almost an hour, officers continued to speak with the man, who officers said then began firing his gun from inside the truck. The male then reportedly got out of his vehicle and put the gun to his head again, prompting officers to shoot non-lethal foam rounds and pepper spray to get him to drop the gun.

Police said the male then fired two shots toward officers, prompting officers to shoot at the male. The man was then taken into custody and given medical aid but later passed away.

Eight officers were put on leave after the incident, per policy. The officers involved had between one and 18 years of experience in law enforcement.
