Semi truck driver cited after hitting I-25 overpass in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Two lanes of southbound I-25 were temporarily closed near Lake Avenue after a crash Monday afternoon, according to Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
Around 1:20 p.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department said officers responded to multiple calls about a semi-truck carrying an excavator on southbound I-25 hitting an overpass for the MLK bypass.
According to CSPD, at least one vehicle on the road was hit by debris from the bridge.
Police said the truck also hit an electric signboard, causing damage.
CDOT said two right lanes were closed between Exit 139: Martin Luther King Jr Bypass and Exit 138: CO 29; Lake Avenue at mile point 138.
Police on scene told 11 News crews that the semi drove off in a hit-and-run but was later located by Stratmoor Hills Fire Department crews near Venetucci Boulevard and Sam’s Heights.
According to police, the damage to the excavator caused it to discharge fluids, resulting in a response from Hazmat teams.
CSPD said investigators contacted the driver of the truck, who was cited with careless driving, oversized loads and hit-and-run charges.
The road reopened around 3:40 p.m., after CDOT crews completed inspecting the bridge.
