Firefighters have made significant progress on a fire burning outside Woodland Park, bringing containment up to 100 percent Wednesday afternoon.

The 40-acre Turkey Track Fire is human-caused and started at a shooting area of the same name off Highway 67, 9 miles from Woodland Park. It was burning on the perimeter of the 2002 Hayman Fire. The fire was first reported just after noon on April 11.

The specific cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities say it is the seventh fire ignited in the target shooting area along Forest Road 343 during the past two months.

No structures were threatened, but the immediate area around Turkey Track is closed until further notice for the safety of firefighters and the public.

The Forest Service said that there was such an abundant amount of shooting trash and snags in the area that firefighters had to do mitigation work to lessen any hazards those could cause. Trees killed in the Hayman Fire have also proved hazardous to firefighters due to the flames burning around the roots and bases of the dead trees. The Forest Service said Saturday firefighters let those trees burn out naturally since none were a risk to the containment lines.
