Crews bring 3 stranded climbers safely down from Eldorado Canyon in overnight rescue
BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - Three climbers are now safe after being rescued from Eldorado Canyon over the weekend.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said that around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, deputies received a report of climbers who needed help on the Naked Edge climbing route in Eldorado Canyon State Park.
The sheriff’s office said the three climbers were not able to keep climbing after losing their route and being without headlamps. They reportedly ran into issues with the rope management and pace, which resulted in them becoming delayed after nightfall.
By 10:30 p.m., deputies said crews with Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and Boulder Emergency Squad were able to reach the first climber and give them warming supplies. By 11:31 p.m., deputies said they were able to reach the two lower climbers and secure them.
Crews said they were able to get all of the climbers safely back to the trailhead by 2:25 a.m.
“Climbers attempting long or technical routes should carefully manage their time and ensure they have a realistic plan to complete their objective well before dark,” the sheriff’s office said. “Always carry reliable headlamps with extra batteries, even for routes expected to be completed during daylight hours.”
Climbers are also urged to bring enough food and water to sustain themselves in case of a delay, as well as layers due to the quickly changing weather conditions in the mountains.
