COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Springs police arrested a suspect who assaulted an officer after being detained for trespassing and theft.

Police said they arrested 49-year-old Jason Hernandez early Thursday morning around 2:30 a.m. after officers were dispatched to a business in the 500 block of South Nevada Avenue, in downtown Colorado Springs. Police said they were investigating a trespassing call.

Officers said they contacted Hernandez and detained him. Officers established probable cause to charge the suspect with trespassing and theft.

However, officers said that as they were going to serve Hernandez a citation and release him, he attempted to escape from custody and then assaulted an officer.

Police said after a brief physical confrontation, the suspect was taken to a cruiser and transported to the El Paso County Jail, where he was booked on updated charges, including escape and second-degree assault.

As of Friday morning, Hernandez is being held in jail on a $10,000 bond.
