Protestors rally at Colorado Springs City Hall after Minnesota man killed by federal agents
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Hundreds of protestors gathered at Colorado Springs City Hall Sunday after federal agents shot and killed a Minnesota man during an immigration operation.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Alex Pretti, 37, approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm handgun on Saturday.
The department said Pretti resisted when officers attempted to disarm him, leading to an agent opening fire.
The incident sparked more protests across Minneapolis, heightening tensions between residents and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Colorado Springs protesters gathered in cold, snowy weather conditions Sunday afternoon, with one attendee telling 11 News that if people in Minnesota can rally, so can she.
“Yesterday in Minneapolis, they were out representing a good cause,” Celeste Ramirez said.
“And it was... I want to say negative 23° out there, and so the cold couldn’t be an excuse for today.”
DHS claimed Pretti had two magazines on him along with the gun, and that it looked like he wanted to “massacre law enforcement.”
Video of the incident appears to show Pretti holding a cell phone to record officers.
Demonstrators at City Hall claimed that Pretti never removed the weapon from his hips, and that federal agents removed it from him.
Following the shooting, Governor Jared Polis released a statement requesting a full investigation into the incident.
