Monument Fire Department announces new fire chief

MONUMENT, Colo. (KKTV) - Monument Fire Department announced a leadership update on Friday, May 29, saying their search for a new fire chief has ended.

The Monument Fire District Board of Directors unanimously selected Colin Fitzgerald of Leawood, Kansas, as the next chief.

Chief Fitzgerald brings more than 30 years of fire and emergency services experience to this role, the fire department said. He currently serves as Fire Chief for the Leawood Fire Department and has been with that organization since 2012, including service as Fire Chief since 2020.

The Fire Department said that before joining Leawood, he served with the Lenexa Fire Department from 2001 to 2012, advancing through positions of increasing responsibility. His academic and professional credentials include a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, a Bachelor’s Degree in Technology Administration, an Associate Degree in EMS and Fire Science, and completion of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.

The department’s current chief, Andy Kovacs, will stay with the department through the end of the year to facilitate the transition.
