PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - A southern Colorado man has been sentenced to in a shooting that injured a young girl in 2024.

On October 20, the Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office said that Michael Santistevan was convicted of two counts of assault and four counts of attempted assault as a habitual offender after authorities said he shot at a family’s vehicle on July 7, 2024, hitting a 10-year-old girl in the back.

They said the girl was in a neighborhood near Troy Avenue and Constitution Road, looking for a stolen bike with her father and sister.

According to the DA, the father believed he had spotted the stolen bike outside of an apartment owned by Santistevan. After realizing that it was not her bicycle, officials said they began to drive away.

As the family was driving off, police said Santistevan fired at their vehicle multiple times, striking the girl once in the back.

The Sheriff’s Office said Santistevan was sentenced to 64 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections as a habitual offender, along with two 32-year sentences to be served concurrently.

“This verdict and sentence are another example of how violence in our community will not be tolerated,” Kala Beauvais, 10th Judicial District Attorney, said. “A 10-year-old child was senselessly injured with more people put in danger in this act of gun violence. We are grateful to the Pueblo Police Department for their investigation. Our office will continue to fight for the safety of every family in Pueblo County.”
