WARNING, GRAPHIC: Colorado Springs Police release video tied to deadly shooting involving officers
The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Michael Hurst
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - On Thursday, the Colorado Springs Police Department issued a news release including a video tied to a deadly shooting involving officers from May 18.
WARNING: The video at the top of this article was shared by CSPD and showcases audio and images that can be hard to watch.
The shooting occurred along Deerfield Hills Road near Milton E. Proby and South Academy. Police were called to the address on reports of a suicidal man with a gun. Police were told while en route that a shot had been fired inside the house but that everyone had gotten out safely.
“When officers arrived on the scene, they attempted to check the welfare of the suspect, at which time additional shots were fired from within the residence into the surrounding neighborhood,” CSPD said in a news release on the incident.
Police called for SWAT as backup, but say that before a tactical team could arrive, Hurst came out of the house with his gun.
“Officers verbally engaged the suspect in an attempt to peacefully resolve the situation and commanded the suspect to drop the firearm. The suspect refused to obey commands,” CSPD said.
At that point, at least one of the officers shot the suspect. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died a short time later.
Per CSPD policy, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating this officer-involved shooting.
The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Michael Hurst by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
