Couple survives tornado in neighborhood, high winds tossing camper with them inside
OVERBROOK, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) - A married couple in Kansas says they survived a tornado that rolled through their neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service issued a preliminary assessment Tuesday afternoon, saying it was an EF1 tornado with winds of 100 mph.
According to the NWS, the tornado was on the ground for about 10 miles, hitting Osage County before lifting in Shawnee County.
The couple, who asked not to have their names used, told WIBW they received a tornado warning on their phone while they were inside their camper.
They said the hard rain stopped and it was quiet before the camper suddenly started moving and tumbling with them inside it.
The man said he was tossed outside with the mattress while his wife was inside the rubble of the camper.
They both have some bruises but said they are OK along with their two dogs.
The camper was heavily damaged, as was the house that was being remodeled next to it.
Tornado damage was found from the southeast part of Shawnee County into northern Osage County, officials said
Several homes in the area suffered damage, but no serious injuries were reported.
The NWS said a second tornado also touched down in Osage County with winds recorded at 110 mph Tuesday morning.
That tornado mainly damaged trees in central Osage County.
