TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) – A horse was killed Wednesday morning after being hit by a school bus just southeast of Topeka, Kansas, officials said.

According to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, no students were on the bus at the time of the collision. Only the driver of the bus was on board when the crash happened.

Authorities said two Shawnee County sheriff’s units arrived at the scene by 9:15 a.m. and pronounced the horse dead.

Deputy Abigail Christian said it was unclear how the horse got out of its enclosure.
