PUEBLO, Colo. - CSU-Pueblo's football team showcased its 2012 squad in the Annual Red/White Game at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl, which saw the White Team take down the Red Team 23-7.
The squads were chosen by a team draft Friday, with the CSU-Pueblo coaching staff split amongst the teams. Head coach John Wristen allied with neither team, instead keeping an eye on the play from the field.
The game began in inauspicious fashion for the White Team, as quarterback Troy Graham (Sr., Chandler, Ariz.) threw an interception to sophomore Jarrod Lacy (So., Boynton Beach, Fla.), who followed his blocks beautifully to return the pick for a touchdown and give the Red Team a 7-0 first quarter lead.
On the next possession, though, the White Team drove down the field, mostly riding the back of redshirt freshman tailback Chris Ashe (RFr., Widefield, Colo.), who ultimately ran it in for a 5-yard touchdown scamper near the close of the first quarter. After a missed extra point, the score was 7-6 in favor of the Red Team.
After a scoreless second quarter, the White Team opened it up and commenced what would turn into 23 unanswered points on the Red Team. Efrain Hernandez-Cosyleon (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) started off the scoring with a 30-yard field goal, and the passing game continued to gangbusters in the fourth.
Redshirt freshman quarterback M Dick (RFr., Fort Collins, Colo.), a transfer from New Mexico, drove the ball down the field with precision to score the White Team's first passing touchdown, launching a 33-yard arcing pass to Dominique Grimes to give the White Team a 16-7 lead.
Graham returned to the game to helm the White Team's final scoring drive, this one coming on a pass to senior tight end Tyler Hamlin (Sr., Louisville, Colo.) to make for the final score of 23-7.
With the spring drills coming to a close, CSU-Pueblo's football squad will put its organized on-field activities on hiatus until fall camp in August, when it will begin preparing for its season-opening showdown with West Texas A&M at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl Aug. 30.
