Michael Harrington Qualifies For U.S. Amateur

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Beau Schoolcraft of Englewood used a round of 5-under-par 65 -- the lowest score of the tournament by four shots -- to earn medalist honors in the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying that concluded Tuesday at the Broadmoor Golf Club’s West Course.
The 2007 4A state high school champion while at Kent Denver, Schoolcraft made seven birdies and two bogeys in his second round of the event. He posted his 2-under-par 138 total on Monday evening, but much of the field couldn’t complete the second round on Monday due to two lightning delays, so the qualifier wrapped up on Tuesday.
Joining Schoolcraft in qualifying for the U .S. Amateur out of the 78-player field were Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs (75-70--145) and Parker Edens of Greeley (73-72--145). Harrington was the only one of the three qualifiers who had to complete play on Tuesday.
The U.S. Amateur is scheduled for Aug. 23-29 at the Chambers Bay course in University Place, Wash.
Harrington, a 38-year-old financial advisor, will be playing in his second straight U.S. Amateur, while Schoolcraft and Edens will be making their debuts in the event. Schoolcraft is transferring to the University of Colorado -- and will play on the golf team -- after two seasons at UCLA, while Edens competes at South Dakota State.
Earning the two alternate spots on Tuesday were Taylor Stamp of Colorado Springs (146) and John Ahern of Morrison (147).
A second 36-hole U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying tournament will be held Aug. 10 at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.
