Woodland Park Utilities confirms to KKTV 11 News an unknown amount of sewage was found to be leaking into Fountain Creek Monday morning.
Utilities Director Kip Wiley says a sewer main backed up due to a blockage of "roots and rags." He says the sewage started coming out of a manhole in a field along Highway 24, and running into the creek. The backup has been repaired and the sewage is no longer leaking.
"We just had a sewer magnet was blocked, that blockage created a backup that surcharged out of a manhole and that manhole then spilled sewage onto the ground and through the creek," Wiley explained. "Systems occasionally have backups from time to time and normal wear and tear, roots get into pipes and they have to be cleaned from time to time.
Woodland Park Utilities has notified the state and is working to clean up the area.
KKTV 11 News also has calls in to Colorado Springs Utilities to find out if the creek will need to be tested in El Paso County. We will let you know when we learn more.
