Fremont County Woman Facing Charges For Living In Filthy Conditions

A Fremont County woman is facing charges for animal hoarding and child abuse.

Deputies say they could smell an odor coming from the home as they stood on the street. They say they had to wear HAZMAT suits before going into the home.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office took 26 cats, two chinchillas and a ferret from a vacant home in Penrose last month. Deputies say the woman who used to live there voluntarily took 23 Chihuahuas to the humane society before allowing them to go in and take the other animals away.

Rhonda Bernard, 57, turned herself in at the Fremont County Detention Center Monday afternoon. She later bonded out.

Bernard is also facing a child abuse charge because her 10-year-old son reportedly was living in the home.
