The deadline is just five days away for the group trying to gather thousands of signatures to recall El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa.
Approximately 44,387 signatures are needed to get the recall on the November ballot. They group is about two-thirds of the way there; they need about 15,000 more.
The group says they’re going to be out in front of the courthouse through Friday, trying to fill as many petition pages possible.
"We put Terry Maketa it in there, we can take him out," Francis McCargar said.
McCargar helped start the petition. He believes the effort to recall Maketa will be successful. If they can continue to fill up pages with signatures, the public can vote on the matter in November. But it comes with a price tag: it will cost taxpayers $20,000 to verify the signatures.
We talked to one of the sheriff's supporters, who said since his term is up in January anyway, this is all a waste of time and money.
"I do agree with recalls, but I don't agree with them in this case. I do agree that it is a waste of taxpayer money at this point," Anne Marie Gary said.
Gary is is a family friend of Maketa and supports the sheriff. She said his personal mistakes shouldn't be public.
"Terry's a good guy. He always stood up for everyone's rights, he was wonderful during the fires and the floods we've had. He's a great citizen," Gary said.
Signatures have been collected over the past three weeks. Maketa's former campaign manager Wendy Habert and former Undersheriff Teri Goodall have joined the effort to recall the sheriff.
McCargar said Maketa should be recalled in part because he’s lost the public's trust.
“He has been a disgrace the last few months to El Paso County, to the citizens of El Paso County and he needs to go, and he should understand that,” McCargar said.
Volunteers plan to be in front of the El Paso County Courthouse through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, and in the evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The petition must be turned into the El Paso County Clerk and Recorders Office by Saturday.
We'll be sure to keep you posted and let you know if the recall petition has enough signatures to be put on the November ballot.
