DUI Charges Added For Suspect In Crash That Injured 8

A man already facing vehicular assault for an accident that sent eight people to the hospital now faces DUI charges as well.

Colorado Springs police say five of the victims have "significant" injuries. Two remain in critical condition.

The suspect has been identified as Jonton Igwonobe.

The accident happened on southbound North Academy Blvd. near Palmer Park Blvd. at approximately 10:45 p.m. Sunday. Southbound Academy was closed until 5:15 a.m. Monday.

Police say speed is considered a factor in the crash, and a witness told 11 News that it looked like the two vehicles involved in the crash were racing through the intersection when they collided.

Police say one of the victims that was seriously injured was not wearing a seat belt.

The CSPD Major Accident Unit is investigating.

Anyone who saw the crash or the vehicles speeding down North Academy Boulevard past Constitution Avenue, Palmer Park Boulevard, or San Miguel at approximately 10:43 p.m. Sunday and can identify the make and model of the vehicles is asked to call Springs police at 719-444-7000.
