An El Paso County Sheriff's spokesman tells 11 News a baby has serious injuries after being attacked by a dog, but is expected to survive.
The 9-month-old girl was attacked Sunday afternoon at a home in eastern El Paso County. She was bitten in the face.
Investigators say the dog is a pit bull or pit bull mix that belongs to the baby's grandfather.
The family tells 11 News the baby, Serena, was moving around the house in her walker. The dog had a bad leg, and the baby bumped into the pet from behind. The grandfather says at that point the dog felt the pain, turned around very quickly and bit the child. He says he believes the dog didn't realize who or what was behind him when he turned.
The pet was taken away by the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. A citation was given to the grandfather for unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog.
According to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, the dog was signed over to them by the owner. He requested the dog be euthanized.
The Humane Society says the procedure has happened and the animal's corpse will be tested for rabies.
The family told 11 News that Serena had surgery Monday morning and will require plastic surgery in the future.
Donations for Serena can be made to the "Serena Medical Fund," at the Colorado Springs State Bank on 3110 N. Nevada Avenue.
