Pack's NCAA Tournament halted by Roadrunners 78-70

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 9, 2018) – The No. 3 seed Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball team fell to the No. 6 seed Metro State University Denver Roadrunners 78-70 in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional. The loss eliminates the Pack and ends their season with a 25-7 record.
Katie Cunningham (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) scored 20 points and hauled in 17 rebounds. The 17 rebounds marked a career-high for Cunningham. She made 12-of-13 at the charity stripe and finished with two steals. In just two seasons, Cunningham ranks eighth all-time at CSU-Pueblo with 605 rebounds. Her 277 career assists ranks sixth. Cunningham's 151 assists this season, stands as the third-highest single season total in program history.
Molly Rohrer (Jr., Greenwood Village, Colo.) collected a game-high 26 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Rohrer knocked down 9-of-9 at the line. Rohrer's 26-point outing moved her into the top five in scoring all-time at CSU-Pueblo with 1,374 career points. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year added three blocks. She scored 22 points in the second half including 19 in the fourth quarter.
Much like Wile E. Coyote, the Pack chased the Roadrunners all game but could never catch them. CSU-Pueblo never led as their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance ended in the first round to the 23-8 Roadrunners. CSU-Pueblo is now 2-10 in NCAA Tournament games.
The Roadrunners sprinted out to a 6-0 lead early. Cunningham finally got the Pack on the board with a layup 3:25 into the game. CSU-Pueblo scratched their way back within three at 10-7. However, the Roadrunners went on a 6-2 run to close the quarter with a16-9 lead. The Pack made just 2-of-11 from the field (18.2 percent) in the first.
CSU-Pueblo started the second quarter with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 18 with 6:34 left in the half. The Pack had a chance to go in front, but turned it over. The Roadrunners answered with seven consecutive points to take a 25-18 lead that would carry into a 30-24 advantage heading into the break.
In the third quarter, the Roadrunners started to pull away. A 10-5 run put MSU Denver up by double-digits, 40-29. They would use another 8-2 run to push their lead to a game-high 15. MSU Denver led 52-38 after three.
Rohrer went on a rampage in the forth quarter scoring 19 points over the last 10 minutes. The fourth quarter turned into a free throw shooting contest as the fouls piled up.
The Pack would only be able to get it back within single digits once. Shelby Megyeri (Fr., Green Mountain Falls, Colo.) sank a 3-pointer to make it 77-70 with 24 seconds left. The Roadrunners would go on to win 78-70.
CSU-Pueblo finished with 35 fouls compared, while the Roadrunners were charged with 30 infractions. The ThunderWolves drained 26-of-30 at three free throw line. The Roadrunners took 41 free throws making 30. The No.6 seed outrebounded the Pack 43-31 including a 12-4 advantage on the offensive glass.
Despite the loss, the Pack has totaled 25 or more wins in three consecutive seasons. Over the past four years, the Pack has 97 wins, the most of any team in the RMAC.
