Pack powers past No. 25 Dixie State with DH sweep

ST. GEORGE, UTAH Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball swept its doubleheader with No. 25 Dixie State University Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field. The Pack rallied to win game one 14-11 and took game two 9-7.

Dakota Popham (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) drove in five runs between the two games. Popham finished the day 3-for-7 with three runs scored. The Pack's third baseman swatted a three-run home run in game two.

Rion Santamaria (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) posted five hits in seven trips. Santamaria scored four runs in between the two games. He scored twice and stole a base. Santamaria finished game two 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Aidan Welch (So., Seattle, Wash.) had two hits in each game. Welch drove in three runs in game two. He also came home twice in game one.

Easton Adler (Jr., Mead, Colo.) went 3-for-5 in game one. Adler scored three runs.

JP Hopkins (R-Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.) and Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) each went 2-for-4 in game two. Hopkins added two RBIs and a double in the night cap.

The Trailblazers raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Santmaria drove in Stone Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) in the second with a single, but the Trailblazers countered with a run of their own in the second to keep their lead at six.

In the third inning, the Pack scored two runs. They added three more runs in the fourth. Romero smacked a two-run double that cut the Dixie State lead to 7-6.

Pinch-hitter, Robbie Espinosa (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) clubbed a three-run home run in the fifth. Espinosa's second home run of the season vaulted the Pack ahead 9-7. RBI singles from Sauceda and Popham gave the Pack an 11-8 lead after the fifth.

Each team scored three runs in the sixth. Bret Ricklefs (Sr., Meridan, Kan.) closed the door on the Trailblazers, recording the final four outs to pick up his first save of the season.

Justin Jaime (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) earned his first win of the season. Jaime pitched 3.1 innings of relief. He surrendered just one unearned run. Jaime struck out four.

The Pack got off to fast start in game two. Hopkins hit a two-run double in the first and scored on a Welch single to make it 3-0 before the Trailblazers picked up their bats. Dixie State tied the game up with a three-run home run of their own to knot it up at three heading into the second inning.

Popham pummeled a pitch over the left center field wall in the top of the second. His fourth home run of the season handed the Pack a 6-3 lead. Welch cranked a two-run double that scored Hopkins and Espinosa, putting the Pack on top 8-3.

After a Dixie State run, the Pack answered with a run in the third. Santamaria brought in Sauceda with a base knock to make it 9-4. They would roll to a 9-7 win.

Brett Matthews (Jr., Queen Creek, Ariz.) struck out 11 batters in five innings. Matthews earned his second win of the season, evening his record at 2-2.

Andrew Coverly (Jr., Centennial, Colo.) threw a scoreless seventh inning. He picked up his fifth save of the season.

The Pack now owns a 10-5 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. They stand 15-13 overall. The Trailblazers fell to 21-8 (11-4 RMAC).

CSU-Pueblo will try to win its third consecutive series Sunday. They will play the Trailblazers in the series finale starting at 12 p.m.
