COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (MW Release) – The Mountain West will become the first FBS conference to host its own league within the College “League of Legends” season when 10 teams open the inaugural MW Esports Series this Saturday.
“The Mountain West has always been on the cutting edge, and we are excited to be the first FBS conference to host our own league within the College ‘League of Legends’ season,” said MW senior associate commissioner Carolayne Henry. “We look forward to the season culminating with our main event in Las Vegas and building upon the event we held last year.”
The league, which features five weeks of regular-season play and is organized by Riot Games, will be divided into a Mountain and West Division. Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico and Wyoming will compete in the Mountain Division, while Nevada, San Diego State, San José State, UNLV and Utah State will be in the West Division.
Regular-season action begins on Feb. 2 and concludes on March 2. Matches are tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT on each Saturday but can be rescheduled to another date during the week if both teams agree to a date change. The Mountain West Esports Series will culminate in Las Vegas on March 15-16 and is being held in conjunction with the 2019 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Basketball Championships. The event in Las Vegas will be produced in partnership with ESP Gaming, the premiere competitive gaming content and production company behind the World Showdown of Esports tournament series.
“I had the opportunity to attend the Mountain West Esports Showdown last year and was blown away by how much they were able to pull off,” said Riot Game’s College Esports Lead Michael Sherman. “We’re thrilled to see them take another leap forward and join the College ‘League of Legends’ season.”
