Luna Eclipses Voyagers in Rout
The Vibes offense hit like it was on the moon, and starter Carlos Luna brought the Voyagers back to earth in 8-1 rout at Centene Stadium Tuesday night.
Luna dazzled over six innings, posting 11 strikeouts in the victory. The right-hander tossed 4 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball, and yielded only two knocks over his final five outs.
The offense chewed up the Voyagers pitching staff like so many moon rocks. The feast produced eight runs on 15 hits (13 singles), highlighted by three-hit performances from Joe Gray Jr. (3-for-5, 3 R, 2B, SO) and Edwin Sanó (3-for-4, 2 RBI). Every Vibes starter recorded a hit in the win.
Timely hitting with two outs triggered the Vibes offense in the third. A walk and a hit-by-pitch placed a pair of runners on for Gray Jr. The righty collected an infield single, his first hit since July 21 in Ogden. Bryan Torres then pushed a groundball to right, bringing home Luís Avalo and Micah Bello with the single. The Vibes kept the pressure on. Torres swiped second with Nick Kahle at the plate, his 14th stolen base. Kahle extended the Vibes lead with a two-RBI single to center. Kahle ended the inning after being thrown out trying to score on an Edwin Sanó liner to right. Sanó’s single marked five consecutive singles for the Vibes offense.
The Vibes kept humming in the fifth. Gray Jr. doubled on a flyball to center. After a groundout to short moved him to third, Gray Jr. was ushered home on a fielding error by the Voyagers. The break gave the Vibes a 5-0 lead.
The offense continued to percolate. In the sixth, back-to-back singles from Michael Wilson and Avalo pushed home a Vibes run. In the seventh a one-out double to left by Kahle provided another opportunity for the Vibes. Sano smashed a groundball into center, plating Gray Jr. and Kahle.
Relievers Brady Schanuel and Taylor Floyd capped off the strong night by recording the final nine outs. Schanuel logged two innings of work, allowing one hit and a walk while recording strikeouts for all six outs. Floyd tossed the ninth, allowing a run on two hits in the inning.
The Vibes continue their second leg of eight-game road trip with the third game of the four-game series against the Great Falls Voyagers.
