Falcons Claim Three Event Titles on Opening Day

BOULDER, Colo. Three event titles, including a pair of first-place marks in the javelin, highlighted the opening day of the outdoor track and field season for Air Force, as a small contingent of Falcons kicked off competition at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder. The trio of junior Sierra Rodriguez, classmate Parker Spearman and freshman Lashawn Taylor combined for half of the event titles handed out today (March 15) at Potts Field.

Rodriguez and Spearman led Air Force to a sweep of event titles in the javelin throw, as Rodriguez recorded a mark of 131’7” to win the women’s event and Spearman posted a distance of 199’10” to win the men’s title and pace the Falcons to three of the top-four marks. Fellow junior Bailey Ishler finished second (191’8”) in his Academy debut, while freshman Nick Oesterling placed fourth (186’8”) in his first collegiate meet. Classmate Taylor Cotton also made her first appearance for Air Force, posting a debut throw of 92’9” to join Rodriguez among the top five of the women’s standings (fifth).

Taylor earned his first outdoor victory, as he registered a mark of 44’7” to win the triple jump. Taylor was one of two Falcons to finish in the top three, as junior Anthony Davis took third with a distance of 43’6½”.

In the first hammer throw of the year, sophomore Addyson Smith posted a career-best distance of 152’7” to pace the Falcons to three of the top-four spots. Classmate Meghan Carbiener registered a throw of 141’6” to take third, while fellow sophomore Donna Borer finished fourth with a distance of 136’1”. Senior Andrea Abel rounded out the list of top-five finishers, as she took second in the triple jump (35’3¼”).

The Falcons return to Potts Field tomorrow for the majority of events at the Jerry Quiller Classic. Action is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
