CC Hockey: Ben Copeland Named NCHC Rookie of the Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. Colorado College freshman Ben Copeland followed up his NCHC Player of the Week honor by earning the league’s Rookie of the Month Award for February.

Copeland picked up his second NCHC monthly honor of the season (December) after compiling six points (5g,1a) in seven February games to tie for the NCHC rooking scoring lead during the month. He more than doubled his season goal total in February, potting five goals to tie for the NCHC rookie lead during the month and tie for third nationally among freshmen.

He scored all five goals in the series with No. 8 Western Michigan, Feb. 22-23, including a career-high four in an 8-2 victory on Saturday, notching the Tigers’ first hat trick since Mason Bergh scored three times vs. Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 14, 2017.

Copeland, who had four goals in 29 games entering that weekend, became the first CC player to score four times in a game since Andrew Hamburg against Air Force on Oct. 19, 2012 and the first Tiger freshman with four goals since Jay McNeill against Air Force on Nov. 11, 1992.

The Edina, Minn., product is the second Division I player in the country to score four goals in a game this season (Arizona State’s Johnny Walker on Oct. 27 vs. Omaha) and the first DI freshman to score four goals in a game since New Hampshire’s Patrick Grasso on Oct. 29, 2016 vs. Merrimack. He is also the second player to score four goals in an NCHC conference game in the history of the league. Joey Benik of St. Cloud State had four goals vs. WMU on Nov. 14, 2015.

On the season, Copeland now has nine goals and nine assists for 18 points in 32 games, tying for the CC rookie scoring lead.

Copeland is now eligible for Hockey Commissioners’ Association (HCA) National Rookie of the Month, which will be announced next Wednesday.
