LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 26, 2019) - An eight-run seventh inning sparked Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball's 12-4 win over New Mexico Highlands University Friday at Brandt Field.
On the mound, Beau Brieske (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) struck out eight batters over seven innings of work. He allowed four runs and came away with his sixth win of season. Brieske's eight strikeouts give him 104 on the season. These 104 K's are the most by a Pack pitcher since the program restarted in 1994. He improved to 6-4 with the win.
Daniel Abilies (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) collected four hits in five trips. Abiles slugged a pair of doubles and scored three runs. He also added two RBIs. The catcher now has nine hits in last 13 trips with seven runs scored over his last three games.
Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) matched a season-high with four RBIs. Sauceda went 3-for-5 with a walk. The Pack's first baseman also scored twice.
Dakota Popham (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) reached base three times. Popham doubled twice and walked. He also scored two runs.
The Pack got on the board first. An error allowed Popham to come around to put the Pack up 1-0 in the third.
The Cowboys did all of their damage in the bottom of the third. They scored four runs thanks to four singles to take a 4-1 lead.
Abiles led off the fourth inning with a double. After a Connor Hughes (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) single, Sauceda knocked in Abiles with a base knock of his own to trim the Cowboys lead to two.
Highlands held its lead until the seventh inning when the Pack busted out for eight runs. Sauceda led off the inning with a walk. He scored on an Aidan Welch (So., Seattle, Wash.) one bagger. JP Hopkins (R-Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.) followed with a RBI single that brought in Popham. Abiles drove in Welch and Hopkins with his second double of the game. In his second at-bat of the inning, Sauceda came through with a two-run knock that plated Abiles and Jesse Holguin (Fr., Colton, Calif.). Easton Adler capped the inning with a two-run double that made it 10-4. The Pack sent 12 batters to the plate in the eight-run frame.
Two more runs came in for the Pack in the ninth as Abiles and Robbie Espinosa (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored on another Sauceda knock. Diego Sanchez (Jr., Whittier, Calif.) and Justin Jaime (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) each threw a scoreless inning of relief as the Pack prevailed 12-4.
CSU-Pueblo evened its record at 21-21. The Pack stands 16-13 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Saturday will feature a doubleheader between the Pack and Cowboys. Game one of this DH starts at 12 p.m.
