PUEBLO, Colo. Sophomore Julia Baroth set a school record Sunday afternoon after carding a five-under par 67 to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team at the Colorado State University-Pueblo El Cheapo Classic Tournament. The Mountain Lions are in fifth place with a 304 after one round of play at Walking Stick Golf Course (par 72, 6,000 yards).
St. Mary's University leads the 16-team tournament, posting a four-over par 288.
Baroth, who is averaging a team best 75.9 stroke average heading into the tournament, posted five birdies on holes No. 1 (par 4), No. 4 (par 5), No. 9 (par 4), and par 5 holes No. 13 and No. 15. She holds a two-stroke lead over second place Courtney Ewing from CSU-Pueblo.
The Mountain Lions McKenna Vanko is second on the team in scoring and is tied for 29th overall after shooting a 77. Regina Dillon is two strokes behind Vanko and tied for 41st overall. Megan Vernon rounds out the Mountain Lions scorers with an 81. Baroth, Vanko and Dillon each tallied a birdie on hole No. 1.
The second and final round will begin Monday morning at 9:30 a.m.
