USAF ACADEMY, Colo. Air Force men’s basketball (10-15, 5-8) dropped a 76-62 Mountain West contest to Utah State (20-6, 10-3) Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. Lavelle Scottie continued his scoring tear, leading the Falcons with 25 points.
A pair of double-digit scoring runs ultimately led to Utah State pulling away from the Falcons. With Air Force leading 14-10, Utah State took control of the game with a 13-0 run to go up 23-14 with 9:44 to go in the first half. The Falcons rallied back to cut the lead down to seven at the half at 34-27. The Falcons were trailing by seven with 11 minutes to play in the second half, before a 10-0 Utah State run made it a 63-46 ballgame with 7:42 to play.
Scottie went 10 of 17 from the floor, adding four rebounds, a block and a steal. The junior has scored 84 points in the last three games, the most by a Falcon in the Mountain West era and the most since Jarmica Reese scored 86 points over a three-game span in 1998.
Ryan Swan was one rebound shy of another double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Swan got to the line eight times, making six. The junior also had one steal and one block.
AJ Walker scored eight points and Caleb Morris added six. Chris Joyce scored five points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Sam Merrill led Utah State with 20 points and six assists. Neemias Queta added 17 points and six rebounds. Diogo Brito scored 11 and Abel Porter chipped in with 10 points.
Air Force shot 42 percent from the field and 39 percent from three-point range. Utah State shot 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.
Air Force returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Fresno State. The game tips at 7:05 pm PT and will be broadcast by AT&T SportsNet.
