CANON CITY, Colo. (KKTV) - Firefighters have extinguished one of two fires that sparked north of Canon City Saturday evening and have reached full containment on the other.
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office announced Monday afternoon that the 8 1/2-acre Quarry Fire was 100 percent contained. The fire sparked near Fremont Peak and prompted the precautionary evacuation of nearby Eastridge Campground. It had previously been estimated at over 10 acres, but the size was downgraded after a flyover Sunday.
On Sunday, the sheriff's office had announced the smaller Twin Fire was completely out. That fire was burning off of County Road 3 near the Royal Gorge and scorched less than an acre. There were no evacuations in place for that fire.
Investigators believe both fires were started by lightning.
