(KKTV) - Scam victims, you know have a chance to get your money back. The wire transfer company Western Union has agreed to pay back $586 million.
It comes after an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice. The FTC said the fraudsters were able to use Western Union to get payments, even though the company was aware of the problem and had even received hundreds of thousands of complaints. The company admitted to aiding and abetting wire fraud. Click here for more information on the settlement.
You can submit a claim if you sent money to a scammer through Western Union between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 19, 2017.
The Department of Justice has to verify each claim. It could take up to a year to process your claim. It covers all sorts of scams, like the grandparent scam and online dating scams. You have to submit your claim by February of next year.
