State Patrol investigates deadly car vs. train crash in Bent County

Two people were killed Friday morning after a crash involving an Amtrak train and Toyota Corolla was reported in Bent County.

Colorado State Patrol said the call came in at 8:31 a.m. The accident happened between County Road 8.5 and County Road 8.75, which is right next to Highway 50 in Las Animas.

11 News confirmed that two people, who were inside the Toyota Corolla, died during the crash. They are Samuel Cornejo, 35 and Gabriela Martinez, 35. Both are from Las Animas. State Patrol tells 11 News the driver did not see the train coming and collided with it.

There are no lights or arms to warn drivers that a train is approaching. There are signs that the intersection is a railroad crossing. More than 100 people were on the train but no one was hurt.
