PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) During a special meeting Tuesday night the Pueblo City School District 60 school board voted to keep one school open and close another.
Two schools were on the chopping block due to underfunding, aging buildings and declining enrollment. The board voted to keep Minnequa Elementary School open and close Heroes Academy.
The Pueblo District 60 School Board met in late March to discuss the future of the schools. The superintendent recommended that Heroes K-8 and Minnequa Elementary should both be shut down at the end of the school year.
“It’s unfortunate and difficult and sad that we’re at the place again where we need to close schools. We have a perfect storm of situations,” D-60 Board of Education President Barb Clementi said.
The board also looked over potential plans for the district's high schools, whether to build new ones and close some of the existing ones. There are several possible plans, all of them, a long way from final approval.
Heroes Academy will close at the end of the school year.
