TRINIDAD, Colo. (KKTV) - The subject of a police chase is dead after allegedly threatening officers with a gun Sunday night.

The Trinidad Police Department says the incident began at Alta Convenience on State Street just after 8 p.m. when police responded to the store to speak with a man acting suspiciously. The suspect made a beeline for his truck when he saw officers and sped off driving erratically.

Police and a Las Animas County sheriff's deputy followed the suspect to I-25 and Main Street. Law enforcement says the suspect pulled out a gun at the interstate on-ramp. Details about what followed are limited at this time, but authorities confirm officers fired several times. The suspect was hit and died at the scene. He has been identified as 46-year-old Lawrence Lovato.

The case is now under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation; per state law, when officers are involved in a shooting, an outside agency heads the investigation.

Three Trinidad police officers and the Las Animas County deputy have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
