COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating a string of car break-ins at a popular park. Deputies say a woman reported her purse stolen Sunday afternoon at Fox Run Regional Park.
The woman told deputies that her car window had been smashed and her purse and mother's purse were taken. The theft happened in broad daylight.
“Criminals are looking for easy targets," said Jackie Kirby, a spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. "If your purse is in plain view, your car is going to be a target.”
When deputies went to the park on the theft call, they discovered three other purses that had been discarded in the parking lot.
“We see a rash of them, and then they seem to calm down for a little bit, and then we see another rash of them," said Kirby.
In this recent case, a credit card was fraudulently used.
The sheriff's office says these are crimes of opportunity. They encourage the public to stay vigilant. They also offered these tips:
1. Lock your vehicle at all times
2. Don't leave anything of value in your vehicle or in plain view
3. Leave your windows rolled up
4. Park in a well-lit, well-trafficked area of the parking lot
5. Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement
