COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A suspected drunk driver allegedly lashed out at police and is now facing assault charges after injuring an officer.

Officers first encountered the suspect after responding to a crash at Woodmen Road and Wilson Way Monday afternoon and learning the driver had walked away. They quickly found him and took him into custody for careless driving and DUI.

Police say the driver consented to a blood test to confirm intoxication and was taken to an area hospital. He allegedly stopped cooperating after getting to the hospital and attacked the officers, injuring one officer and almost injuring another. The police department did not elaborate on how the suspect caused the injuries, only saying in a blotter entry that he "applied physical force against officers and attempted to cause injury to another officer."

The injured officer hurt his leg and was unable to return to duty.

The suspect now faces assault and attempted assault on a peace officer charges, in addition to the previous traffic-related charges. He has been identified as Alexander Greenly.
