Suspect killed following deputy pursuit in Centennial

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (KKTV) - A suspect is dead after a law enforcement pursuit ended in gunfire early Tuesday morning.

The chase started with an attempted traffic stop around Broadway and C-470 shortly after 3 a.m.

"The deputies immediately started to take gunfire," said Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock.

That set off a chase through Centennial and southern Greenwood Village, with the people in the Jeep continuing to fire at pursuing deputies while chucking duffel bags out the window.

The chase ended in a crash at I-25 and Dry Creek Road, where the deputies and suspects traded gunfire.

"At that location, officers were again fired upon," Spurlock said. "My officers returned fire. We struck and killed one suspect; we have another suspect that's at a local hospital, and the third suspect is in custody."

No deputies were hurt.

The vehicle the suspects were driving in was stolen from a Denver suburb, Spurlock said, though at the time of this writing he wasn't sure if that was the reason for the initial traffic stop.

Officers from several nearby police departments have spread out along the chase route to locate all the discarded duffel bags.
