Suspect in deadly liquor store shooting sentenced to 6 years in prison

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A judge sentenced Charles Lobato to six years in prison for
killing Shawnee Tapia
in January 2018.

Shawnee's family went before a judge Monday to explain who he was as a person. They say he was a kind, compassionate, loving soul. His wife said it's heartbreaking for Shawnee to come home from serving in Afghanistan, fighting in war, to just lose his life.

The suspect's girlfriend, Mercedes Garcia, pleaded guilty to accessory to a crime. The judge sentenced her to three years probation.

According to the district attorney's office, Garcia bought a hotel room and put it under her name in order to allow Lobato to hide out there after the crime.

He was running from police for almost nine months before they found him in the hotel near Castle Rock.
