Suspect in deadly liquor store shooting pleads guilty to manslaughter

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - UPDATE (4/15/19): Charles Lobato plead guilty Monday to reckless manslaughter in the 2018 death of a soldier and father of two in Colorado Springs.

Lobato now faces four to eight years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 24.

PREVIOUS (9/22/18): One of Colorado Springs' most wanted fugitives is now off the streets.

On the night of Jan. 7, 2018, 35-year-old soldier and father of two Shawnee Tapia was shot to death outside a liquor store. One week later, Charles Lobato was identified as the alleged killer. He had been on the run ever since.

Springs police say Lobato popped up in Costilla County in April, but when officers tried to contact him, Lobato allegedly shot at them and sped away.

In recent weeks, Lobato had become a regular fixture on 11 News' "Monday's Most Wanted" list, most recently Sept. 17. Five days after that appearance, law enforcement tracked Lobato to a hotel on Genoa Way in Castle Rock and took him into custody.

The Colorado Springs Police Department announced Lobato's arrest Saturday, and thanked the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office SWAT team for their assistance.
