COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A SWAT situation ended in Old Colorado City Wednesday morning after the suspect shot and killed himself.
The situation started overnight with a possible dispute between landlord and tenant at a motel in the 2700 block of West Colorado Avenue. Police were called to the scene at 4:30 a.m. after shots were fired.
"There was information as we came on scene that this was a tenant/landlord issue that had occurred the night before. Some comments were made through the night or early in the morning," said Lt. Howard Black with the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the home as officers arrived.
"We've had multiple shots fired by the suspect at the scene. Shots were fired as officers were actually on scene. Some of those officers had to take cover as those shots were being fired," Black said.
Black told reporters it was unclear if the suspect was actually firing at officers.
People were evacuated from the motel while the suspect was still firing his weapon, and businesses in the area were forced to remain closed until the situation was resolved.
Negotiators attempted to talk the suspect down by phone.
Four hours after the standoff started, police confirmed the suspect took his own life. He has not been identified at the time of this writing.
No law enforcement or civilian bystanders were injured during the incident.
