Springs suspects accused of obtaining personal info belonging to 100+ nationwide
Three car theft suspects in Colorado Springs are now being investigated for obtaining information belonging to more than 100 people nationwide.
Springs police say they began investigating the trio in connection to the car theft on Aug. 7, alongside investigators with the U.S. Postal Service. In the course of the investigation, they learned at least one of the suspects was "heavily involved in identity theft and forgery." Evidence included counterfeit money, forged state ID cards, and forged credit cards and checks.
From there, detectives found personal information and documents such as tax forms, titles and deeds, and marriage certificates linked to at least 123 people across the country. Police say the suspects got most of the items of the internet through various websites that facilitate the buying and selling of personal information.
The investigation is ongoing. The suspects have not been identified at the time of this writing.
