Homicide detectives have arrested a teenager as the suspect in a double-slaying near a school campus earlier in the summer.

The shooting was reported early in the morning of June 29 near Murray and Bijou in Colorado Springs. The victims were identified two days later as 18-year-old Kevin Santana-Villa of Colorado Springs and 22-year-old Diego Cruz-Aceves of Colorado Springs. Police said at the time that the shooting may have stemmed from a disturbance near the Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy campus. One of the victims was found dead on the school track and the other was found seriously injured nearby in the 4000 block of East Bijou Street.

"It looks like we had two large groups in a disturbance there at the running track, and from there we had shots fired," said CSPD spokesperson Lt. Jim Sokolik. "Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male in the track area of the Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy. After locating that deceased male, officers located a second male party with apparent gunshot wounds at the corner of the apartment complex over there."

Santana-Villa died on scene and Cruz-Aceves died at a Colorado Springs hospital.

Tuesday, one month after the victims were identified, police took a 17-year-old male into custody. Because of his age, he has not been identified at this time. Police announced the arrest Wednesday.

The teen faces two counts of first-degree murder.
