Court documents: Woman says she shot and killed boyfriend after he attacked her
A Colorado Springs woman says she shot her boyfriend after he hit her multiple times and prevented her from leaving the apartment, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by our news partners The Gazette.
Erica Arellano faces second-degree murder charges, according to court records.
The shooting was reported shortly after noon in the 900 block of Teal Court, which is near Mallard and Chelton. Police found the victim lying face down inside the doorway of the apartment, The Gazette reports. He has not been identified.
According to Arellano's account, detailed in the court documents, the couple started fighting around 9 Tuesday morning. Three hours later, Arellano says she tried to leave to pick up her child from school and her boyfriend attacked her, hitting her over the head with an exercise shake bottle over and over, including after she fell. Arellano told police her boyfriend also punched her several times as she lay on the floor.
Arellano allegedly crawled towards the door with a gun in her hand, stood up and shot her boyfriend twice. She says she was the one who called police.
11 News has reached out to the Colorado Springs Police Department for more information and has also put in a request for the affidavit.
We are told an autopsy could be completed as soon as Wednesday afternoon.
