Sheriff's office says new scam in Pueblo County has snared several victims

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A new scam is making the rounds in Pueblo County -- and it's a convincing one.

The sheriff's office says several people have already fallen victim to the scam.

The scam involves a caller claiming to be with the Social Security Office, who tells the victim their Social Security number has been compromised and/or linked to illegal activity. The individual is then told to pay a fee, or else the number will be deactivated. The so-called "agent" says the fee must be paid by purchasing gift cards from various stores.

If you receive this call, hang up and call the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office at 719-583-6250.

Never give any personal information over the phone unless you are 100 percent certain it is a legitimate agency on the other end. To play it safe, the sheriff's office suggests hanging up and calling the agency yourself to ensure the call really was from them.
