COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Five people were hospitalized Saturday evening after an alleged drunk driver flipped the vehicle into a tree.
Police say the driver peeled out of the Mission Trace Shopping Center parking lot at a high rate of speed and almost immediately lost control and rolled the van.
The crash happened right in front of a fire station.
"I happened to be here," said Lt. Kevin Ducy with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. "We were in the station conversing, heard the accident, looked out the window and saw it. So, obviously, we had a really quick response time."
Ducy said three people were able to get out of the van on their own, and firefighters helped the other two. All of the injuries ranged from minor to moderate.
"They happened to be in the station, both our squad and our engines. So we had six people plus myself immediately on scene. With that many patients, that's a huge positive for the patients and ourselves," Ducy said.
The crash happened on Jet Wing Drive just east of the intersection with South Academy Boulevard. Several lanes on Jet Wing were closed for hours and reopened late Saturday night.
Police said they arrested driver Jesus Alvarez-Ramirez on DUI and vehicular assault charges.
