Wrong-way driver possibly under the influence in serious Colorado Springs crash
A serious crash closed multiple lanes on a busy Colorado Springs street Wednesday afternoon.
Early into the investigation, police believe the person who caused the crash was a wrong-way driver and possibly under the influence. Speed may also be a factor.
Just before 2 p.m. the crash occurred on S. Academy at Bijou, just south of E. Platte. The intersection is on the east side of the city. The crash impacted both directions of traffic on S. Academy. All lanes of southbound Academy were closed just after 2 p.m.
According to police, the investigation revealed an eastbound Tesla was attempting to turn northbound at the intersection when it was struck by a Ford sedan which was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of S. Academy Blvd. The Ford then caromed into a Mercedes which was westbound on Bijou, attempting to turn southbound onto Academy Blvd.
Six of the eight people involved in the crash needed medical treatment.
The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Michael Tucker of Colorado Springs. He is facing charges of vehicular assault and DUI. Some of the victims had serious injuries, but thankfully no one had life-threatening injuries.
The intersection was back open at about 6 p.m.
