8-year-old boy killed in Pueblo car crash, reportedly took his seat belt off to help his dog
A tragic crash in Pueblo Thursday evening claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy.
Eric "Mikey" Maciel, Jr, age 8, of Pueblo died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident, according to the Pueblo County Coroner. Maciel was critically injured in the crash and "was transported from the scene by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced," the coroner added.
Eric was getting ready to enter the third grade at Baca Elementary.
"It is with great sadness that, along with the family, the Pueblo School District 60 and the staff at Baca Elementary mourns the loss of one of our students that passed away yesterday in a tragic accident," Dalton Sprouse the Director of Communications for D-60 wrote. "Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with their family at this time. Members of the school district's crisis response team are working with the family and any staff member in need of support."
The crash was reported at about 5 p.m. on Thursday. Officers had blocked off eastbound Santa Fe Drive at E. Northern Avenue.
Early into the investigation, police believe a woman was driving with her son when their dog started to get sick in the car. Investigators believe the boy took off his seat belt to help the dog, and while doing so his mother turned around to tell him to buckle up. While the mom was turned, the crash happened.
The mom was driving westbound on Santa Fe Avenue and was making a turn onto Northern Avenue when the cars collided. The mom and the other driver had minor injuries.
Investigators do not believe speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the crash. It isn't clear if anyone will face charges.
