Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries Tuesday evening following a possible DUI crash.

The crash happened around 5:20 p.m. on South Academy Boulevard near Academy Park Loop on the southeast side of the city.

Colorado Springs police said a red Acura was going south on South Academy, and a black Saab was traveling north on the same road when the driver tried to turn left onto Academy Park Loop. Police said the Acura hit the Saab, which caused major damage to both cars. The Colorado Springs Fire Department was called to the scene and had to extricate both people involved.

As of 9:50 p.m., police could only say the people involved had serious injuries. No other details on the extent of injuries were available.

Police said they believe alcohol and speed may have played a role in the two-car crash. Southbound Academy was closed for more than five hours as police investigated. The intersection re-opened around 11 p.m.
