Driver arrested for DUI, vehicular assault, other charges after 2 separate crashes
A man is facing a laundry list of charges after police say he caused two crashes within blocks of each other.
Officers say they first caught up with Jesus Duran-Barreto after he hit a moped near the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Hancock Expressway Monday night. Duran-Barreto was allegedly drunk and arrested for DUI and vehicular assault.
During the investigation, police say they learned Duran-Barreto had been involved in a crash at Pace Drive and South Academy shortly before the crash at Hancock Expressway. Duran-Barreto allegedly rear-ended a Mitsubishi, injuring that driver, then fled the scene and went on to hit the moped minutes later. He faces charges for leaving the scene of an accident for that crash.
The Mitsubishi driver's injuries were minor, while the moped rider was seriously hurt but is expected to recover. Duran-Barreto was not hurt in either crash.
The suspect has been booked into the El Paso County jail on the aforementioned charges, among others, police said.
