COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A mother and three children were trapped in their vehicle after crashing into a semi-truck late Saturday morning.

The crash happened just before noon near the intersection of South Union Boulevard and Hancock Expressway. Investigators said the semi-truck was heading northbound on Union and was attempting to make a u-turn. The small car, which was also traveling northbound, hit the semi, causing the car to become wedged under the 18-wheeler.

Other drivers, including the person behind the wheel of the semi, raced to free the family while waiting for first responders to reach the scene.

When ambulances arrived, they managed to safely remove the family from the car. All four were taken to the hospital. Two of the kids were in critical condition.

Crews had to cut the sedan from the bottom of the semi.

Northbound and southbound lanes were closed for most of the day.

No charges have been filed. This is an ongoing investigation.
