Reported sexual assault in Colorado Springs prompts a social media warning

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Springs Police are investigating a reported sexual assault that occurred Wednesday night.

11 News confirmed with police on Friday that there is an investigation tied to the reported sexual assault that happened in an area near S. Academy Boulevard and E. Fountain Boulevard.

Details on the incident are not being shared publicly by police at this time.

Multiple people reached out to 11 News Friday morning after different variations of a social media post started circulating on Facebook concerning an alleged "serial rapist" tied to Wednesday's report. Colorado Springs Police are not aware of any patterns tied to rape in the city, but always encourage victims of sexual assault to reach out to them. One of the social media posts shared with 11 News reads as follows:
"There is a serial rapist out right now. A woman from one of my groups was assaulted last night and CSPD told her they were dealing with a serial rapist."

The post was shared on multiple Facebook groups. It goes on to tell people to be careful and vigilant.

To reiterate, as of Friday afternoon, police informed 11 News they are not investigating a known pattern of rape in the city. Authorities we spoke with do not have a reason to believe there is a serial rapist in the city at this time. They still ask victims to come forward for help.
