A high school student is facing serious charges. He reportedly assaulted a substitute teacher at a local high school.

This happened Monday at Mesa Ridge High School, just north of Fountain.

Several students told 11 News the teacher is pregnant and is doing OK. She was checked out by the school nurses right after she was hit, but did not go to the hospital.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office told us it happened around 9:30 a.m.

Investigators said it all started as a disagreement between the student and substitute teacher inside the classroom. Students say the argument was over a grade on an assignment.

It's unclear how many times the substitute teacher was hit, but again, she is expected to be OK.

The student did not finish the day at school, but the District 3 spokeswoman could not say if he was sent home or just left.

EPSO said the student is now facing third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and interference with staff at an educational institution. They are all misdemeanors.

They said the student was released to his parents.

He is now facing an automatic five day suspension. District 3 says they will review EPSO's investigation before handing down further punishment to the student.
